Flu vaccines offered on walk-in basis & in neighborhood clinics

9/9/2015 (La Porte, IN) - It just got easier for members of the community to get their annual flu vaccines and recommended pneumonia vaccines, with convenient walk-in services in Michigan City and Hamlet, and several clinics taking place in local neighborhoods. Indiana University Health VNA Services is providing flu vaccinations in several locations this year throughout September and October.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone ages 6 months and older be vaccinated for flu, especially those who are at risk for serious complications from the flu. Those most at risk include children younger than 5 (but especially younger than 2), adults 65 and older, pregnant women, women at two weeks post-partum, and residents of nursing homes and shared living spaces. Please note, the IU Health VNA flu vaccination program is for individuals ages 9 and older. For children younger than 9, please refer to your child's healthcare provider.
Walk-in flu and pneumonia vaccine services is available from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday - Friday at IU Health VNA, 901 S. Woodland Ave., Michigan City, and IU Health VNA, 5955 E., 600 N., Hamlet. (For the Hamlet office, please call before arriving to ensure a nurse is on site). Community-based clinics are as follows:
- 2-4 p.m., Sept. 20 at Hanna United Methodist Church, 101 W. Hopper, Hanna
- 3-5 p.m., Sept. 21 at La Crosse Library, 307 N. Main St., La Crosse
- 8 a.m.-Noon, Sept. 29 at the La Porte County Family YMCA Senior Health Fair, 901 Michigan Ave., La Porte
- 9-11 a.m., Oct. 1 at Wanatah Town Hall, 104 N. Main St., Wanatah
- 9 a.m.-Noon, Oct. 5 at Michigan City Senior Center, Two on the Lake, Michigan City
- 2-6 p.m., Oct. 6 at Women's Fair, Blue Chip Casino Stardust Event Center, 777 Blue Chip Drive, Michigan City
- 9-11 a.m., Oct. 7 at the Union Mills Conservation Club, 100 Mill Pond Road, Union Mills
- 8 a.m.-3 p.m. (Eastern Time), Oct. 20 at the Senior Expo at Plymouth High School, 1 Big Red Drive, Plymouth
The flu vaccines cost $30, and pneumonia vaccines are $85. Cash is accepted, or Medicare will be billed for those who are eligible and present their Medicare cards.
