Starke County Community Health Fair packed with events for everyone
5/1/2015
5/1/2015 - It's time to start this season of renewal with a healthy boost! The 4th annual Starke County Community Health Fair will feature dozens of screenings and opportunities to participate in highly-interactive health events. The fair takes place May 13 from 2 to 6 pm at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center, 55 E. Lake St., Knox. Live Life Well is the theme, and health topics range from preventive care in men and women, to the value of a good night's sleep.
"We are offering more screenings and opportunities to meet and talk with doctors and providers than ever before," said Maddie Spoljoric, community engagement specialist for IU Health La Porte and Starke hospitals.
At 2 pm, Kerry Stamps will present the up-beat Certified Insane Fitness demo to get the event moving. At 3 pm, Lyjia Strachan, MD, will present "The Importance of Preventative Care in Women." At 4 pm, Mindy Whittacker, RPSGT, will present "Discovering a Good Night's Sleep: How Sleep Can Impact Your Life." At 5 pm, Mangalore Subba Rao, MD, will present "The Importance of Preventative Care in Men."
"You can see how this event easily has something for everyone, and it's a great opportunity to meet our local doctors and providers," Spoljoric said.
Free screenings and tests will include: body fat percentage, blood sugar for diabetes, strength and balance assessments, blood pressure, heel bone density test for osteoporosis and clinical breast exams for qualifying women. Participants also can sign up for $25 Heart Cart screenings (a $1,200 value!).
One of the most popular attractions is expected to be the Colorectal Cancer Exhibit, featuring a life-sized, walk-through colon showing the various stages of abnormal growths and cancer. Seth Tatel, MD, a gastroenterologist, will be on hand to answer questions about colorectal cancer screening, and free colorectal cancer take-home screening kits will be available.
Participants can sample delicious healthy appetizers, and the first 300 guests will receive a free T-shirt. The event is sponsored by IU Health Starke Hospital in conjunction with Community Services of Starke County. For more information, visit IU Health Starke Hospital on Facebook or call 219.326.2415.
